My trailer is put together with a million screws with what appear to be Torx
head screws. Except, a T15 is too small and a T20 is too big. What are they?

They're custom made by tribesmen in Botswana.

Count the grooves. If there are 8, use a square drive bit.

My cargo trailer is built like that, and after I bought it I looked
everywhere for an 8-point bit -- until I realized a square bit would fit
just fine.

Our 5er also has the screw with the square hole that Torx won't fit. I
found a set of screw drivers at Wal-Mart that had heads that fit perfectly,
but I can't remember what they called them.

Actually, if it is a square hole they should properly be called Robertson's,
as an Canadian can tell you.

I fix computers for a living and carry around a set of 50 secure bits from
every possible make you can think of. The rounded butt square bit works the
best for me.

They're a combination bit; you can use either a phillips or square-drive.

I think you and he are talking about two different things.

I know the head you're referring to, but what he's describing is similar
to a Torx but has eight indentations around the circumference of the
hole instead of six. I have them on the sheet metal of my cargo trailer
too.

He can use a square (Richardson) bit, but he can't use a Phillips.
There's nothing for the "wings" of the Phillips to grip.

That would be Robertson, not Richardson. Quite common here in Canada.

Close enough -- unless your name is Robertson or Richardson <g>.

Your bit is probably in the common 100 pc security bit set, as sold on
Harbor Freight or eBay:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=91310
eBay item 290000348015
It's got all kinds of oddball bits, and even if you don't find an exact
match, you'll find something to turn your screw. The case is very
flimsy and mine broke at the "hinge" before I was able to get it out of
the package (much less flimsy, the kind of plastic that commonly
packages small electronic stuff -- difficult and dangerous to open).

Else, if your screws really are Torx-shaped but sized between T15 and
T20, grind down a T20 a little.

They are called Double Square Truss Head screws, made by American Bolt
& Screw, but sold only to manufacturers in quantities of 7000, for
less you need to order from the parts department of the trailer
manufacturer.

It's possible to turn them with a Phillips, but a square drive works better.
