Official weight of Ford F450/F550 for insurance reasons

I am considering an F450 or F550 truck to tow a fifth wheel. Before
buying, I called my insurance agent to get an idea of the insurance
premium. Right off the bat they put this truck in the commercial
category because it is over 10,000 lbs. I asked if they go by the
category, or the actual weight of the truck – they said actual weight.
By my calculations, the F450/F550 weighs around 8,600 lbs for a crew
cab. My agent was willing to consider this and asked for official
documentation. The only thing I found was the Ford tow rating
document. Unfortunately, it does not spell out the weight of the
vehicle. I explained how you can calculate the weight by subtracting
the tow rating from the GCWR, but that did not fly. They called a Ford
dealer and they quoted a "shipping weight" of 15,000 lbs, whatever
that is.

Q – Is my calculation correct of the actual truck weight of around
8,600 lbs?

Q – Is there some official Ford document I can point my insurance
agent to?

Thanks for the help.

Have you considered a certified scale ticket? That is the only fully
reliable way to know weights anyway.

My Peterbilt 385 has a "shipping weight" of 13,3?? pounds so I'm paying SD $70
for a seven ton non commercial truck. They use the weight as it comes from
Peterbilt before adding the tow body, hitch, and dog house. That's the weight
on the Certificate of Origin."

Tom,

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I need to call Ford and see if they
have a "cerficiate of origin" with the actual weight.

I have a 2003 diesel crew cab 4x2 F550 with a flatbed that weighs 9,300
pounds full of fuel, with nobody in it, and no cargo.

Ford publishes a specs document that includes "Payload/Weight Ratings" for
their Superduty F-250 through F550 series trucks. I stumbled across it
online sometime last year.

It gives the "Base Curb Weight" for a 2001 F-550 4x2 Crew Cab 202.2 inch
wheelbase at 7,024 pounds, and for the 4x4 at 7,364 pounds. This appears
to be a stripped-down weight, but the document includes a worksheet for
adding options, e.g. 4-speed transmission = + 459 pounds.

I can email you the 2001 superduty document in pdf format if you'd like.
So far I haven't found the link for the source, but will be happy to post
it when I find it.

2002 data is available at:

I haven't found a source yet for later models.

I owned a F450 CC to pull my fifth wheel. State Farm would only insure it as
commercial. It cost me $1200/yr. I have a perfect driving record with
nothing but the most modest of claims and have been with State Farm for over
30 years. What a rip off.

I sold my F450 and now have my $100,000 + diesel pusher insured with GMAC
for have that price.

Go to a Truck Stop and get an official weight from their certified
scale.
